Namaquanula bruynsii a little known localised
Amaryllid found in
various places on the Tiras
Mountains in South Western Namibia. The
bulbs
respond almost immediately to late summer rains,
sprouting
flower buds and flowering within about
2 weeks after a good rainstorm.
Penrock Specialist Flora concentrates on the
propagation of several
unusual and often rare
bulbous plants such as this species.

Namaquanula bruynsii bulbs often grow leaves
after the first good
late summer rains in seasons
when they do not flower. Late summer
growing
and flowering is typical of several bulbous plants
in various
genera that occur in often arid, summer
rainfall parts of South Africa
and Namibia.

Nerine frithii is one of the most elegant of the
smaller Nerine
species. Bulbs are available
through Penrock Plants and seeds are
sometimes
offered in February and March.
This plant was photographed in February 2006,
a year of exceptional
rainfall, growing in its
habitat near Lichtenburg in the North West
Province.

An afternoon thunderstorm over the veld in the
Nerine frithii habitat
east of Mafikeng in the
North West Province. The rich colours of
the early
autumn grassland and the storm clouds above
resemble almost
exactly the symmetry of a
Pierneef painting.

Pterodiscus ngamicus quite often has thick trunks which resemble miniature Baobab Trees. This plant photographed in sandveld near Lephalele, has well formed seeds at the base of its annual stems and flowers and buds higher up on the fresh growth.
P. ngamicus seeds are offered by Penrock Seeds and plants are listed on the Penrock Plant list. Some attractive specimen plants are offered from time to time by Penrock Specialist Flora.
