NEW RELEASE

THE BUSHMAN CANDLES.
by Charles Craib and John Lavranos.

This book is a detailed account of all the Bushman Candle species. The majority of them occur in South Africa and Namibia mostly in arid areas with erratic rainfall. They are renowned for their beautiful flowers and unusual growth forms.

The text is accompanied by lavish illustrations including water colour paintings of the different plants by Ellaphie Ward-Hilhorst and Gerhard Marx. Bowen Boshier’s pencil drawings depict the vast landscapes in which the plants grow. In addition there are numerous photographs of the plants in their natural habitats taken mainly by Connall Oosterbroek and Tim Harvey.

The book is fully discussed in the newsletter on this web site that ran from October 2009 until the end of January 2010 - Click here. A number of illustrations that feature in the book also appear in the newsletter. The book is scheduled for publication at the end of July 2011.

Daubenya comata bulbs sometimes grow very close together
in habitat. In this instance two rose coloured plants,
flowering simultaneously, appear almost joined together.

A robust Haworthia koelmaniorum variety mcmurtryi photographed in habitat. The plant was growing in a deep soil filled pocket between ryolite rocks and its cryptic leaf tips were very well camouflaged amongst ryolite pebbles. There is little difference between robust large H. koelmaniorum variety mcmurtryi and Haworthia koelmaniorum variety koelmaniorum.
Penrock Seeds offers seed from several unusual attractive clones of variety mcmurtryi. Plants from some of the special clones are also propagated by Penrock Specialist Flora.
